History of the Boat Parade

In 1989 Jim Hussmann and a couple of others formed a committee and started the Venice Christmas Boat Parade. They over came a lot of obstacles but on the first Saturday in December 41 boats, decorated in holiday theme completed the parade route.

The parade has continued annually since that time with the decorated boats becoming more spectacular every year. The commitment of the boaters is appreciated by young and old who cheer them on with applause and whistles the entire route.

Local sponsors enable the Boat Parade Committee to fund youth related boating activities as well as a scholarship fund to support interest in the marine sciences. Venice, with it's intercoastal waterway, offers a superb area for viewing a parade of this sort. Viewers line the waterway without fear of being on someone's private property.

If you have never viewed our parade, make this year your first. If you have a boat join us in putting on a show for the community.

No boat is too small!!!

Come and join the fun, stop sitting by the sidelines, it does not take a lot to decorate your boat. I can guarantee the chill that will go up your spine when you first see the crowds will be worth every moment, and you will be hooked. Winning isn't everything, giving back to the community is.

Tips and Hints

We want you to enjoy the boat parade as much as the people viewing it! Below are some ideas and suggestions to make your participation a happy one.

The most important thing to do is have fun and get into the holiday spirit!

The spectators and judges will see your boat for a few short minutes... take advantage of that time and make them remember you! Please decorate both sides of your boat.

Create a theme that is festive, clever and eye catching. Use lots of lights! Keep the judges and audience in mind when decorating your boat.

If you will be adding music, make sure that it is loud enough for everyone to hear. For costumes and props, make sure that they are distinct and large enough to be visible to the audience.

DECORATING YOUR BOAT

VENICE CHRISTMAS BOAT PARADE HARRY & PEG LITTLE ALMYRA III CARVER 32' POWER

WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?

We do it to give something back to the community. By doing this we get more back than we give. The excitement of the children and others watching the parade gives us such great joy.

  1. KNOW YOUR BOAT
Capacity of generator for lights or rent a generator. Reserve in advance.

  2. KEEP IT SIMPLE. BOTH SIDES OF THE BOAT MUST BE THE SAME. FOLLOW THE RULES OF THE PARADE COMMITTEE.

  3. SELECT A THEME
Cartoons, anything with a Christmas theme, movies, children's books, etc.

  4. MAKE A PATTERN
I get brown wrapping paper and make patterns. You can fold it in half and have an even patter.

  5. We take these patterns to: ADVANCE BEAD BOARD styrofoam insulation. Custom chapes & sizes). 156-B Progress Circle, Oakwood Businedss Park, Venice, FL 34292. 941-493-8420

  6. Decorate and put your lights on one side of each figure. Make sure one of each figure's faces port side and the matching figure faces starboard. (Mirror decorations).

  7. Decorate as desired. DO NOT USE SPRAY PAINT on foam. It will dissolve. Use acrylic paint.

  8. Punch holes for placing lights. You will have to figure out the placement of the lights...A 50 light string or 100 light string. Space them so you have enough to go around the figure as desired. You can always tie up the extra in the back... just make sure you are not short. I use a phillips screw driver to punch the holes in the foam. (Use an old cutting board so you don't scratch the area where you are working. We live in a condo, no garage or laundry to do this. We do all our preparation in our living room. Have plenty of extra sweeper bags handy to pick up all the foam that scatters.)

  9. TEST LIGHTS BEFORE YOU START, EVEN IF THEY ARE NEW. TEST AGAIN WHEN HALF OF THE STRING IS PUT ON, THEN TEST AGAIN.

  10. ATTACHING THE FIGURES AND LIGHTS TO THE BOAT
You can use electrical type plastic tie wraps to attach both the lights and the figures. (We do it easier and it seems to work for our boat. We use plant ties that come in rolls. It cuts the exact length you need and you don't have to cut it, just unwrap, when you want to add or move the lights. For attaching the figures I just buy a roll of white gift wrap yarn [the fat kin, not knitting yarn]. I punch two holes in the figure where I want to attach it to the boat railing and tie it on. Tie top two corners and anywhere else it matches a rail to secure it. Be careful so the wind doesn't get behind it and blow it off.

HAVE A GOOD CAPTAIN AND FIRST MATE WORKING TOGETHER FOR THE MOST FUN... OR GET YOUR FRIENDS TO HELP. YOU WILL FIND WHAT GOOD FRIENDS THEY ARE. IF WE DIDN'T HAVE FUN, WE WOULDN'T HAVE DONE THIS FOR 10 YEARS.

HAVE FUN GOOD LUCK

Parade Route

Parade starts just north of the Albee Rd Bridge, there are public areas at the start and down the parade route for a ways and across the water are restaurants.

The parade continues down the Intracoastal waterway and out the jetty as far as land on the south side. There is viewing on both sides of the jetties in this area. There is also a restaurant to the east on the Venice side, and if you come by boat there are plenty of spots along the way to drop anchor.

As it goes down the Intracoastal the next large area for public viewing is on both sides of the Intracoastal which is known as the Venetian Waterway Trail.

Remember this get there early. If you are new to the area take a look for yourself and find that special spot, because there are no bad locations. Again don't wait until the last minute.

On Venice Island when the bridges go up the Circus Bridge remains down for vehicular traffic only, that remains in effect until such time that the other two bridges are reopened to vehicular traffic.

Enjoy yourselves, the boating community is putting this show on for your free of charge. Get involved and donate to the youth (our future) of our community.
